A great update with a nicer UI than before with much greater functionality. Thank you.

Just a few niggles though which would make it even better if fixed:

if the playlist on the phone/tablet and the PC are in a different order the wrong track is played when selected from the phone. You seem to need to ensure that original order is selected in the phone – but sometimes this still shows some lists in the wrong order in subscribed playlists. A great feature but prone to too many problems at the moment.

Library / Downloads / Personal play immediately when selected and no ability to list tracks in these areas, so not really usable.

App does not show when track is unavailable in region – simply doesn’t play when selected. Would be nice if they could be greyed out like the official spotify app.

Biggest wish for this app would be to include an add to play queue option on searches and individual tracks in existing playlists rather than only being able to select songs for immediate play, and being able to view the play queue.

Number of tracks doesn’t report properly in the playlist when playlists are in folders – they report 0 tracks.

Thanks for your efforts!!

Hi,

Thanks for the feedback.

About the playlist order, you can sort the playlist on the phone to manually match the order in spotify by using the sort icon.

About Library, downloads and Personal, there is no api to control it, I can’t select the tracks.

About the region problem, I’ll look into it.

The “add to play queue” option is tricky, I haven’t figured out how to do it properly yet.

For the number of tracks not reported properly when playlist are in folders, the problem comes from the Spotify api. I can only correct it partially.

Regards

Hello I would like to add some wishes:

– Make the hardeware buttons from the phone work with the app. (search, menu)
– Volume hardware keys are only usable in the control screen, would be nice if they work on every screen. (playlist and so on)

Thanks for your feedback. I’ll put that in my todo list πŸ™‚

evoluon

Hi,

The problem with Spotify restarting all the time will be fixed in the next release.

If you want to disconnect from the server on the phone, you have to modify the server settings on the phone and deactivate the auto connect option :
– click on the server icon (upper right corner of the screen)
– select the servers options
– long click on the server you wish to deactivate the auto connection
– select the edit option
– uncheck the auto connect option
– validate

Every day is better, it presents a little problem like the list order.
When you select to play a song it plays another list song. Only if you select “info” in the song you want and then push play it works.

13 07 2011
evoluon

To bypass to list order problem, you can use the sort option in spotimote.
Go in a playlist, click on the sort button then select the sorting method to match the tracks order in Spotify.

You can see an example in the video from the web site.

I’ve tested couple different Spotify Android remotes and I’ve had least problems with this one, great job!

The sort logic seems to slightly differ between Spotify and Spotimote. For example, when I sort my starred list according to artist (ascending), the artist “A Day To Remember” is sorted under D in Spotify, but under A in Spotimote. Because of this Spotimote starts to play wrong tracks when I get past A in my starred list, which is only after couple tracks from the top.

I’m not familiar with Spotify API, but Spotify seems to remember my playlist sort orders. Might there be some way to ask this information from Spotify and do sort operations via Spotify as the current way is bit unstable and requires sorting both Spotify and Spotimote playlists separately?

And +1 for queue, that would be awesome feature.

13 07 2011
evoluon

Hi,

thanks for the feedback. I know the sorting option is not perfect, I’m trying to find another way.

For the queue, I’m also working on it. Stay tuned πŸ™‚

When i closed spotify, spotimote server always forces to open it again.

Should be fixed in version 0.93 of Spotimote (available on the market). Make sure you updated the server on your pc too.

Hi,

It may be because another software using the libspotify (execpt spotify itself) is already running. Please make sure there is only one instance of spotimote running.

Great, very promising app so far.
+1 on the now playing queue.
I am finding the Info links a bit buggy, either that or I don’t understand how to use them. From the now playing screen I can long tap to bring up an Info icon, but it doesn’t do anything. From (track) search results I can long tap to bring up an Info icon, but it is always for the first search result only. This is a shame, because it is nice to explore Spotify that way, e.g. jumping from a track to an artist or album.
Suggestion on the spotify icon that takes you to the now playing screen, it might be nice if that was a toggle so you could tap it again to quickly get back to where you were before, for example browsing your playlists.
Cheers.

Hi, thanks for the feedback. The bug concerning the track info will be fixed in the next version. Good idea about the toggle button. I added it to my todo list.

Hi,

Since the last update Spotimote is not working anymore. Have you changed anything that needs anything changing in the server component or on my Android phone?

14 08 2011
evoluon

Hi,

You should reinstall the spotimote server component.

Regards,

JB

14 08 2011
Henrik

I’ve done that and I’ve reinstalled the android app as well. It still says that there is no connection with the Spotify server component.

17 08 2011
evoluon

Select the information option after clicking on the server icon in spotimote. It should tell you which error it encountered while trying to connect

17 08 2011
Henrik

Sorry for being a lamer, but do you mean on my PC or on my Android phone? On my PC I only see “Don’t run at start up”, “About” and “Exit”, on my phone (HTC Desire S) nothing happens when clicking for an options menu. When I check for servers nothing is listed.

That’s about all the info I can give you… sorry for bothering you but I would simply love to be able to use this app.

I have previously opened up the applicable ports in my firewall, so that’s not the problem.

17 08 2011
evoluon

I meant on your phone. In spotimote application, In the upper right corner, there is the server icon. When you click on it, it should aither :
– display a menu
– bring you to the servers activity

If it displays a menu, it means the server has been detected but spotimote can’t connect to it for some reason. In this case, click on the server icon and select the “information” option. It should display the error encountered while trying to connect.

If it displays the servers activity, it means spotimote is unable to automatically detect the server. In this case, you should try to add the server manually. Click on the add icon and fill the server information (give it a name, fill its ip address and toggle the auto connect and force connect option on).

About your firewall, make sure you opened the port 5116 for tcp and udp.

Keep me informed.

17 08 2011
Henrik

Hey, that did the trick! No server info was there, so I added my computer IP and now it works! Problem is… I don’t have a static IP so I will have to keep changing that. How come it doesn’t detect my computer automatically and is there anything I can do about it?

17 08 2011
evoluon

The automatic detection only works on local networks, not through internet.

For your static ip problem, you can use a service like no-ip.com or dyn.com. Once your account is set up, you just have to replace your server ip address in spotimote by the hostname you set up.

18 08 2011
Odd

I have the same problem as Henrik. The serviceinformation says “java.lang. IllegalArgumentException: Host name may not be null”
IΒ΄ve tried to add my computer IP and i`ve cleared the firewall but nothing… What to do?

18 08 2011
evoluon

did you fill both fields : server address and ip address ?

18 08 2011
Odd

Yepp, both fields are filled. Now I get the message: “java.net SocketTimeoutException”

18 08 2011
evoluon

It means the server address you entered may not be the good one or you are not connected to the same wifi network as your computer. If you are trying to connect through internet you have to make sure you opened the ports on your firewall.

18 08 2011
Odd

Ok, IΒ΄ll keep trying, thanks!

Hello,

I used to use this app. It worked really nice. But now i reinstalled my phone it won’t work anymore. Reinstalled spotimote server to newest version. both on same wifi network. Spotmote server is running, spotify is running etc.. Only thing changed in my phone is that i don’t have root acces anymore but i don’t think that could be a problem?

What am I doing wrong? Or how can I set a server by default?

Thanks!

Hi,

not being root is not the issue. There is a bug in version 0.972 of spotimote, I mixed up the ports… I uploaded a new version (0.973). It should be available in a few minutes on the market and will fix your problem.

Sorry for the inconvenience,

JB

Hello, and thanks for a real cool app. I have used it since the first release.

Since some updates ago, I have a bugging problem. When starting /changing a song from the playlist view it takes several seconds, more than ten, before the song starts. But if i click ff button in the player view, the song change instantly. Is this something tha only I have problem with?

18 09 2011
evoluon

Hi,

When selecting a track from the playlist view, the spotimote server has to simulate the arrow keys a user would press to scroll through the playlist in spotify. If the track you selected is far in the playlist, then it will take some time for spotimote to scroll to it. You can actually see it working if you look at the spotify window when selecting a track from a playlist.

I think this is the delay you encounter, contact me otherwise.

When you click on the fast forward button, spotimote just use the corresponding spotify shortcut, that’s why the track changes instantly in this case. I tried to resolve the issue but without success so far.

Thanks for your answear.

After some testing back and forth it seems to be my antivirus software β€œAvast” that delays the instant connection between client and server when I change songs from the playlist. When deactivating the real time β€œFile System”-scan in Avast, it takes around 2-3 seconds before the new song starts. A lot better than 10-15 seconds.
I bet this is more an Avast software problem, than my hardware.

Has anyone else encountered this problem?

The antivirii programs seems to dislike spotimote, that’s annoying. Sorry for the inconvenience, but there is nothing I can do.

I think the navigation can be better as well. when i search for an artist i have to long press en tab “info” to reach the albums from that artist. when you tab the artist spotify begins to play all songs from that specific artist.

I can’t live without music, so when i come home after a day work i’ve been using spotify on my phone when i’m in the car and i’m using spotify whole day on my notebook. when i come home i have to make the switch to spotimote, so i have to switch my work flow from spotify to spotimote.

even my friends are having troubles using the program, they are fanatic spotify users as well. they say what a shitty app and then i have to tell them they are shitty cause it’s the best app in the world for controlling spotify, you just have to know how it works. but the transition from spotify to spotimote is hard for me as well ! πŸ™‚

another problem i have is that it’s quite hard for me to know which icon is spotify or spotimote. I’m controling my music computer with vnc and it’s difficult to quickly open spotify by the systemtray icon. it’s a 50-50% chance

19 09 2011
evoluon

Hi, thanks for the interesting feedback. I’ll see what I can do to improve the navigation in the app.

19 09 2011
kevin

The thing i like in spotimote and not in spotify is the following:
when clicking on a song it begins to play. that’s it. not going back to main play overview or what so ever.

the reason why i like this is that when you make one miss tab, you don’t have to go back to the album or what so ever. just one other tab and you got the right song. at least, when you are sober. πŸ˜‰

so please don’t change that!

one thing that would be nice to add is the following option:
when viewing a play list and pressing the back button to go back to the play list overview, you end up at the position where you were and not at the top. I don’t know if it’s difficult to add this option in the existing code, but i know the function is available.

btw: i think a lot of people are willing to pay for this app and your developments. My point of view at this moment is: You are doing this in your spear time, so I’m giving you minimum feedback on spotimote. and i’m not requesting you to add the thing. i’m more like “it would be nice to have, but hey, it works and it’s free so why bother.”

πŸ˜‰ keep bringing the good stuff!!!!

19 09 2011
evoluon

Hi,

thanks for your feedback. I’ll try to add the position thing when pressing back. About the navigation, I will have to think about it πŸ™‚

When spotimote goes in the queue on the pc, is the queue empty or filled with tracks ?

About the virus program issue. I uninstalled Avast and installed “Microsoft Security Essentials”. With Avast it took 13-15 seconds to change songs from the playlist. With MSE the time is down again to 2-4 seconds.

If you could hack something that changed songs instantly, as when I use for example the FF button it would be real cool.

Thanks for the info. About the hack, if I knew how to do it, I would have done it already πŸ™‚

Hi there.

So I downloaded the Spotimote app and client for my PC (Win7 etc,). Started up, found my PC from the phone (Galaxy S2), but it refuses to show my playlists. It’s connected to my PC (the check symbol in the little screen to the top right is ever-present).

Everything else works just fine, although the UI could do with an automatic feature that sends you to the “Home” section. And for the love of all that is holy, please rename “home” to “Now Playing”..

That’s it really. How do I fix the playlists issue? Can’t see _any_ of my playlists except my Starred list.

13 08 2012
Patrick

Just a quick correction:
The UI could do with an automatic feature that sends you to the β€œHome” section when you select a new song to play. Also a remote randomize feature would be nice.
